The August Wilson Monologue Competition

Todd Kreidler conceived the idea for the August Wilson Monologue Competition at True Colors Theatre and, in partnership with director Kenny Leon, co-founded what would become a nationally recognized program. Designed as a performance-based competition for high school students, the initiative invited young actors to engage deeply with August Wilson’s ten-play American Century Cycle, a powerful chronicle of the African American experience throughout the 20th century. More than a contest, the competition became a celebration of Wilson’s legacy, promoting literacy, fostering artistic expression, and inspiring a new generation of performers. Under Todd’s leadership, the program expanded to over 19 cities in collaboration with local colleges and regional theaters, culminating each year at the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway, where finalists performed before celebrated judges including Phylicia Rashad and Denzel Washington.
